Graphite Rotor: A Key Purification Component for Aluminum Alloy Degassing

Author:小编 Update Time:2026-07-01

During the smelting of non-ferrous metals like aluminum alloys, melt purification is crucial for enhancing material properties. The presence of hydrogen and oxide inclusions can lead to defects such as porosity and cracking in castings. As a key component of rotary injection degassing technology, the graphite rotor—leveraging its unique material characteristics—serves as a core purification component, ensuring consistent casting quality.

Graphite rotors are precision-machined components made from high-density isostatic graphite, consisting primarily of a rotor shaft and a nozzle head. Their core advantages lie in exceptional high-temperature and corrosion resistance; they operate stably in molten aluminum at 700–900°C without being eroded by the melt or contaminating it. Furthermore, graphite rotors possess excellent self-lubricating properties, enabling long-term, stable rotation without the need for lubricating oil—making them perfectly suited for high-temperature melt environments. Additionally, their high machining precision ensures rotational stability and uniform gas dispersion.

The graphite rotor operates on an advanced principle: driven by a transmission system, it rotates to inject inert gases (such as argon or nitrogen) into the aluminum melt through the shaft and nozzle. Centrifugal force generated by the high-speed rotation breaks the gas into tiny, micron-sized bubbles that disperse evenly throughout the melt. Driven by partial pressure differences and surface adsorption, hydrogen and oxide inclusions in the melt adhere to the bubble surfaces and rise with them to the melt surface, thereby achieving degassing and slag removal.

Thanks to these advantages, graphite rotors are widely used in the purification of non-ferrous metals, including aluminum and magnesium alloys. In the automotive wheel casting industry, graphite rotors are used to degas and purify molten aluminum, thereby enhancing the mechanical properties and corrosion resistance of the wheels; in the production of aerospace aluminum alloy components, they are employed to purify high-end aluminum alloys, ensuring the high strength and reliability of the parts; and in the manufacturing of aluminum alloy casings for 3C electronic products, they are used to purify molten aluminum, improving both surface quality and machinability.
